L O C A L M E M B E R
O R G A N I Z A T I O N S (LMOs)
(B r a n c h e s)
The International Federation of
Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA)
is the premier organization worldwide for medical students
interested in making a positive change in their schools,
communities and the nations as whole. IFMSA-SA is going
about the process of becoming the same for Saudi medical
students and to serve as the forum for this national
cooperation, and uses its model of Local Member
Organizations as its medium to accomplish this.
Understanding the local-national-international setup of
IFMSA is important. Medical students join National Member
Organizations (e.g., IFMSA-SA); National Member
Organizations (NMO) join IFMSA. In this manner, the officers
of a NMO serve as a liaison between medical students in
their country and the international community. IFMSA-SA
adopted a motif of building Local Member Organizations
(LMOs) at every medical school in Saudi Arabia. The logic is
straightforward: Having active groups at every medical
school will allow IFMSA-SA to meet the needs of individual
medical students throughout the country in a more efficient
manner.
Medical students
work together at the local level through their Local Member
Organizations (LMOs). The LMO leadership team is consisted
of an LMO President, and the local officers of the IFMSA
Standing Committees and may be other representatives upon
need. Ideally, we would like to establish all four Standing
Committees within every LMO; for practical reasons, this is
not likely. However, whether a LMO can establish all
Standing Committees or only one, there is a place for them
in IFMSA-SA!
Each school maintains a LMO Representative and Local
Officers for each of the
Standing Committees.
The LMO
Representative
works with the National Headquarters, and each Local
Standing Committee Officer works with their respective
National Officer to bring services to the students through
their LMO. LMOs also organize activities, programs,
meetings, social events and more for students at their
medical school.
